The San Francisco 49ers currently have a well-constructed team that started the NFL season with a bang. They are currently 5-0 and have been putting up impressive numbers with a brilliant Brock Purdy who seems to have many critics that don’t think he is part of the elite. According to none other than Shannon Sharpe, the young quarterback is part of a system at the 49ers that benefits him greatly. There have been many instances that are similar to what Purdy is currently experiencing. A talented young quarterback with many detractors that is not considered part of the elite. Listen, this is only his second year in pro football. It is obvious many will doubt him at the beginning.
Here’s what uncle Shannon Sharpe had to say about Purdy: “No, he’s not an elite quarterback. He’s a product of the system. It’s more credit to [head coach] Kyle Shanahan and what he’s done. He’s a product of the system. Now, that’s not to take away from what he’s doing. It’s okay for him to be in the MVP discussion and not be [Chiefs QB] Patrick Mahomes or not be [Dolphins QB] Tua [Tagovailoa], or not be an elite quarterback. He still has to go out there and operate. He just doesn’t have to do as much as, say, those other guys. In this system, the ability to run the football with Christian McCaffrey and all the weapons, because all he has to do is just not turn it over, get it in Aiyuk’s hands, get it in Deebo’s hands, get it in Kittle’s hands, and let them do the work. But no, he’s not elite. [By] no stretch of the imagination is he elite.”
How can Brock Purdy respond?
Every time a pro athlete gets criticized in this manner, there are many ways in which they can respond. Either they feel offended and go on a rant through their social media responding to his critics. Or they stay quiet and respond where they can have the most profound impact, which is inside the field. Brock Purdy has always showed he is far more mature than most of the players his age, in part due to his upbringing. Nobody is expecting him to respond online to these criticisms from Sharpe and others, he will do it on the field. On Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers play against the Cleveland Browns in search of their sixth consecutive win and to keep their undefeated status. Shannon Sharpe will be definitely watching.
