Ja’Marr Chase has set the NFL ablaze through his first two seasons and has set himself on a historic pace. While his on-field play has been exceptional, his wide receiver takes may need some work.
Chase was interviewed by Robin Lundberg of Sports Illustrated on Tuesday, and he was asked to list the best wide receivers to ever play the game. Here is his list, in no particular order.
- Calvin Johnson
- Antonio Brown
- Cooper Kupp
- Jerry Rice
Lundberg’s immediate reaction was to ask about Randy Moss and Terrell Owens, to which Chase responded: “I’m not knocking ’em, I’d add (Chad Johnson) in there too if I could… there’s only four.”
Chase is right that making a list of four is nearly an impossible task, but his exclusion of Moss had the internet talking. Many were surprised by both Kupp and Brown’s inclusions.
It’s important to note Chase is only 23 years old and Kupp and Brown were likely direct influences in Chase’s game. Chase also mentions Kupp’s “Triple Crown”, when the Los Angeles Rams star led the league in every major receiving category, as a big reason for the choice.
Owens and Moss definitely have a legitimate grievance if they feel slighted. They rank third and fourth all-time in receiving yards, respectively. Moss is fourth all-time in receiving touchdowns, while Owens is fifth.
Brown doesn’t really come close to either of them, or many others, in those categories. Then again, it’s Chase’s Mount Rushmore. His selections are his own personal preferences in terms of play style at the position.
