Buffalo Bills‘ safety Damar Hamlin is part of a very short list of athletes who have suffered a heart issue and lived to continue playing the sport they love. The fact that the medical services responded to his cardiac arrest last season so quickly was essential for his return to the field on Saturday against the Indianapolis Colts during a pre-season game for this new season. A pre-season game that the Buffalo Bills won 32-19 against the Indianapolis Colts. Hamlin played for only a few minutes in the game but he performed well and looked sharp during the time he had on the field. Arguably, the most important moment was when he stepped on the field for the first time and the entire crowd cheered him on.
Even before the game as he arrived at the stadium, the fasn were overjoyed when they noticed he was playing. Coach Sean McDermott was over the moon for watching his playr perform at the highest level once again. He claimed that we all were witness to something truly remarkable that doesn’t happen that often. Hamlin entered the game early in the first quarter as part of the Bills’ kickoff team. The player confessed he felt a massive weight off his shoulders by playing because he wasn’t sure how his body would react to comeptitive football again. Considering he suffered a cardiac arrest, he needs to remain vigilant of any problem his heart might experience. Doctors cleared him to play, so he trusts their professional opinion. He’s been training since this past April and getting ready for this day to come.
Damar Hamlin’s reaction right after the game
“It was fun, it was super fun, it was a great experience, just another milestone and a step up to just getting back to myself as far as the football space. Just chopping this tree down as much as I can, one step at a time. When you step in between those lines, you’re putting yourself at risk by hesitating and reserving yourself. So, I made the choice that I wanted to play, it wasn’t anybody else’s choice but mine, so making that choice, I know what comes with it. So when you see my cleats laced up and my helmet and shoulder pads on, I’m going to go with no hesitation. Because you can’t play this game like that, you’ll put yourself at more risk if you hesitate. I’m out there just not thinking twice, just playing my game how I was taught to play since I was my little brother’s age.”
