Damar Hamlin makes Bills 53-man roster 239 days after cardiac arrest

While it is no surprise that safety Damar Hamlin made the Buffalo Bills’53-man roster for the regular season, it is worthy of highlighting the achievement as another stepping stone in his remarkable story.

NFL Network’sTom Pelissero reported the news on Tuesday morning ahead of the NFL’s roster deadline later in the day. The Bills haven’t officially released their regular season roster.

2023 outlook for Hamlin

Damar, who is 25 years old, will be playing in his 3rd season in the NFL and will start the year as safety Micah Hyde’s backup. He started in 13 games for the Bills last season.

Hamlin has been working closely with the team since he was cleared to return to practice in order to hit every conditioning benchmark on his way back to a regular season game since he suffered a cardiac arrest on January 2 in the last Monday Night game of the regular season against the Bengals.

The Bills were not expected to cut Hamlin. He is still under his 4-year rookie contract and he is considered a valuable asset to Buffalo’s secondary.

Hamlin’s road to recovery

It was big news when Damar suited up in full pads again last month for the start of the Bills’ training camp.

Hamlin spoke to the media after his first padded practice to talk about his decision to return to play in the NFL following his health scare.

“I made a decision…My family, my mom and my dad, they were behind me either way I wanted to go, playing or not. But if this is the decision we’re gonna make, we’re gonna go with it and keep going. So I made my decision. I’m living with it,” Hamlin commented.

After a couple of weeks of intense training on par with the rest of the team, Hamlin made his way back on the field in the team’s first preseason game against the Colts on August 12. He played in 24 snaps recording a total of 3 tackles, including one on a fourth down opportunity.

It is expected that he will play, at least for the first weeks, as a backup safety and a special teamer.

The Bills’ first game of the season will be on September 11 against the Jets on Monday Night Football, making Hamlin’s incredible recovery story come full circle.
