Chargers star Justin Herbert suffers finger fracture in loss to Denver

by Moxieplay

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert was ruled out for the second half of the Chargers‘ week 14 loss to the Denver Broncos.

Herbert injured the finger on his right throwing hand late in the first half, and he was replaced by backup Easton Stick. The Chargers’ star quarterback had completed nine of his 17 pass attempts for 96 yards and threw an interception to Denver‘s Jonathon Cooper.

How did Herbert get injured?

Herbert dropped back to pass with 3:11 left in the second quarter and was going through his progressions when Broncos pass rusher Zach Allen burst through the offensive line. Allen attempted to bat down Herbert’s pass at the line of scrimmage, but he missed — and he smacked Herbert’s right hand in the process of bringing him down.

It turns out that Herbert injured his right index finger on the play, and he couldn’t complete the first half. Stick, whose last regular-season action took place in 2020, completed it instead and took over behind center to begin the second half. The Chargers went on to lose, 24-7.

Herbert has played through most of the 2023 season with a fractured middle finger on his left hand. Now that a fracture has been confirmed on his throwing hand, there is significant concern over whether he will be available for the remainder of the 2023 season.

The last thing the banged-up Chargers needed

Herbert has been the one constant in a severely-disappointing season for the Chargers, who entered the season harboring Super Bowl hopes but now has a 5-8 record and one of the NFL‘s worst defenses.

The Chargers have been without star receiver Mike Williams since he suffered a knee ligament injury in week 3, which has limited the LA offense to some degree. Running back Austin Ekeler missed three games with a hamstring injury, and on defense, edge rusher Joey Bosa has landed on injured reserve with a foot sprain.

Los Angeles is highly unlikely to qualify for the playoffs, and it will have to determine whether Herbert is well enough to return for upcoming games — or whether it’s finally time to punt on 2023 and look ahead to 2024.
